Finding Sweet Moments in the Chaos of Practicing Couples Photography

Let's just take a couple of photos turned into over 1,000 shots taken - both literally and figuratively.

My forewarning was clear, positioning couples is not my forte. Too many hands and limbs and what goes where? Then add a significant height difference - all of this presented quite the creative challenge for me.

Ok, "chaos" is a bit overdramatic, but it can feel overwhelming to try out a pose, then another, it just looks and feels rigid - and you know it just isn't working.

Short of shouting "I promise I have a vision" (ok, I might have done this, several times) something had to give. Lucky for me, it was a bit less stressful and apparently entertaining, as my parents were laughing at my stress during the session, which put them more at ease. I'm calling it a win, and my therapist!

I was in this mental chaos, trying to develop this particular shot. At first I couldn't get the angle right, my dad he had one leg no matter how I positioned him and I couldn't figure out how to correct it short of squaring him up to the camera, which wasn't where I wanted to take this pose. He paused, leaned back, crossed his legs and BOOM - the pose was halfway there. "Nuzzle in Mom" and there. it. is. - we were able to get a such a sweet picture.

It's those unscripted, outtake moments that often become the absolute best images of a session. Some failed posing attempts, (on my part) created lots of laughs - and this photo developed into such a sweet moment which ended up being my favorite of the day. 🩷

I quickly embraced that the most effective way to navigate these classic creative hurdles was to focus on why I enjoy photography and what I want for my clients.

My mantra: I want to see the real you through my camera and delivery that back to you—completely unscripted, unstaged, and entirely authentic. I want to capture the feeling of these moments, these candid interactions that reveal genuine connections and deliver to you a legacy of memories you can look back on, revisit, and cherish forever.​​ (It is true, it has to be for me, it is how I developed my business and keeps me eager for the next session.)
